Seattle, February 4, 2024 – Amazon is excited to announce the launch of Rufus, a new generative AI-powered shopping assistant, designed to enhance the customer shopping experience. Rufus will be available as a beta feature on Amazon’s mobile app in the coming weeks.

Rufus is an expert shopping assistant trained on Amazon’s vast product catalog and customer reviews. Shoppers can easily access Rufus by typing or speaking their questions in the search bar, and Rufus will appear at the bottom of their screen in a chat dialog box. With Rufus, customers can ask specific questions about products, compare features, and get recommendations tailored to their needs.

“Rufus is the start of what we envision as a more conversational shopping journey,” said Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon. “We are launching Rufus in beta to a small subset of customers to understand their shopping needs and continuously improve our generative AI models.”

While it is still early days for generative AI, Amazon is committed to fine-tuning Rufus’s responses to continuously make it more helpful over time. The technology won’t always get it exactly right, but with customer feedback and continuous improvement, Amazon aims to offer an unparalleled AI experience.

Rufus can also answer questions about a wide variety of shopping needs and products. Whether it’s finding the differences between trail and road running shoes or what to consider when buying running gear, Rufus is the go-to assistant for expert advice.

“We want customers to have an easier and more efficient shopping experience on Amazon,” said Jassy. “Rufus is just one of the AI tools we’re developing to make that happen.”

Customers will have the option to dismiss Rufus if they prefer not to use the AI-powered shopping assistant. Rufus’s chat dialog box can easily be moved back to the bottom of the screen for those who choose to use it.

Amazon suggests that users keep an eye out for Rufus in the beta version of the Amazon mobile app in the coming weeks. As Amazon continues to invest in AI technology, Rufus represents the latest tool aimed at enhancing the customer shopping experience.
